It Is OK To Feel Bad About Your Body

Rating sites, social media, and comparison culture can make you feel like your body is not good enough. These feelings are normal — almost everyone has them. But they do not define your worth. Your value as a person has nothing to do with a number on a screen.

If receiving a rating on this site made you feel upset, please know:

  • A rating from a stranger does not reflect reality.
  • Your body is going through changes — it is completely normal to feel awkward about it.
  • Comparing yourself to others online is almost always harmful.
  • If this site is making you feel worse, it is OK to step away. You can delete your account at any time from your profile settings.

⚠️ Warning Signs — In Yourself or Others

If you recognise any of these signs in yourself or someone you know, please reach out for help.

💬 Talking about wanting to die or being a burden to others
😶 Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities you used to enjoy
😠 Extreme mood swings — sudden calm after a period of depression
🔪 Giving away possessions or saying goodbye to people
😴 Sleeping too much or too little, losing interest in food
🍺 Increased use of alcohol, drugs, or self-harm
🔍 Searching online for methods or writing a note
😔 Feeling like things will never get better — persistent hopelessness

🛟 What To Do Right Now

If you are feeling suicidal or in crisis, try these steps:

  1. Tell someone. Call a hotline, text a crisis line, or tell a trusted adult — a teacher, parent, school counsellor, or friend.
  2. Remove yourself from danger. If you have access to means (pills, weapons, etc.), move away from them or give them to someone else.
  3. Do not make any permanent decisions right now. Suicidal crises are temporary — even when they do not feel like it. The pain you feel now will change.
  4. Go somewhere safe. A public place, a friend's house, or an emergency room.
  5. Breathe. Try box breathing: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds. Repeat 5 times.
  6. Write it down. Write what you are feeling. It does not have to make sense. Just get it out of your head.

🧘 Coping Strategies

These are evidence-based techniques that can help when things feel overwhelming.

5-4-3-2-1 Grounding: Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste.
Ice Cube Technique: Hold an ice cube in your hand. The cold sensation interrupts intrusive thoughts and brings you back to the present.
Safety Plan: Write down (1) your warning signs, (2) coping strategies, (3) people you can call, (4) professionals you can contact. Keep it on your phone.
Physical Movement: Walk, run, do push-ups, or dance. Physical activity releases endorphins that can shift your emotional state quickly.
Delay the Decision: Promise yourself you will wait 24 hours. Most suicidal urges pass within minutes to hours. Just get through the next hour.
Limit Social Media: If comparison or cyberbullying is triggering you, close the apps. Your wellbeing is more important than any notification.

👫 Worried About Someone on This Site?

If someone on RateMyBody has said something that concerns you — in a comment, message, or their profile — here is what to do:

  1. Take it seriously. Even if you think they might be joking, treat it as real.
  2. Report it to us. Use the Contact page and select "Urgent" — our moderators will review within 1 hour.
  3. Do not try to be their therapist. You can say "I hear you and I care about you" — but direct them to a professional. You are not responsible for their actions.
  4. Share this page. Send them the link to this page: ratemybody.net/suicideprevention.php

🪞 Body Image & Self-Esteem

RateMyBody is a body rating platform. We understand that receiving ratings — especially low ones — can hurt. We want to be transparent about this and encourage healthy engagement.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Use of This Site

  • Healthy: Curiosity, fun, confidence-building, connecting with others.
  • Unhealthy: Obsessively checking ratings, comparing yourself to others, feeling like your worth depends on a number, uploading repeatedly hoping for a higher score.

If your use of this site is making you feel worse about yourself, we encourage you to:

  • Take a break from the site.
  • Talk to someone about how you are feeling.
  • Consider deleting your account if the site is harmful to your mental health. You can do this from your profile settings — no questions asked.
